A huge conglomerate, employing nearly a quarter of a million people worldwide through a series of interests including publishing houses, financial services, leisure groups and construction companies. Created in 1899 in Turin, it took only 9 years before Fiat exported its first car to the US. 1 year later and Fiat was the largest car company in Italy. The 1920s saw Fiat's market share in Italy sore to 80% and ever since the company has remained robust, if not profitable. As well as the Fiat models, Fiat Group owns Alfa Romeo, Lancia and Ferrari, although the latter is left to its own devices. Although the Fiat Group stable has obvious quality, the vehicles badged as Fiat are no stranger to success either - the prestigious European Car of the Year award has been given to Fiat no less than twelve times. |
