Read BMW articles BMW is one of the most famous car manufacturers in the world. Its origins can be traced to 1917, when it was originally an aircraft engine production company. However, events after the first world war forced the company to explore other avenues, and it was in 1923 that the first BMW motorcycle appeared, the R32, which held several speed records throughout the decade. 1936 saw the introduction of the 328, which proved to be extremely popular. But once again, BMW was forced to cease manufacturing as the second world war came to an end, and so had to survive by producing everyday kitchen and gardening equipment until treaty terms ended. BMW began producing cars again in the 1950s, but weak sales caused financial difficulties to arise. A shareholder meeting resulted in the company deciding to buy the rights to the popular Italian microcar Isetta, which BMW equipped with one of their own motorcycle engines. This was a successful move and allowed BMW to focus on sports cars and touring cars, competing with Mercedes-Benz. The fall of the Berlin wall opened further European markets and BMW was quick to cash in on this. As well as its own luxury models, BMW owns the MINI brand and is the parent company of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars. |
