Read Audi articles Audi started in 1909 under a man named August Horch. He had already started one car company in 1899, but had been forced out. The two companies were to be reunited later, merging in 1932, along with DKW and Wanderer, forming Auto Union, which is where the famous four ringed logo originated. Each ring represents one of the companies. Like many car manufacturers, Audi played a prominent part during World War II, importing and producing cars for military use. After World War II, the Auto Union plants were dissolved as part of war reparations. The company had to effectively begin again using loans from the Bavarian government. More buyouts followed, resulting in the current situation of today's Audi being 99.7% owned by Volkswagen Group, which took place in 1964. Up until the 80s, Audi had a reputation for delivering classy, if somewhat boring cars. This all changed with the Audio Quattro, a turbocharged rally car that captured the world's attention. Since then, the company has seen some downturns, particular in the early 90s, when the stylish chassis of their models were seen to be let down by the performance of the engines they housed, but this ended with the introduction of the A4 in 1996. Since then, Audi has gone from strength to strength and is now seen as a luxury car. |
