VW Polo wins Car of the Year
30/11/2009
The new Volkswagen Polo has been voted the European Car of the Year 2010, with the Toyota iQ in second and the Vauxhall Astra in third place.
Securing a total of 347 points, the VW Polo beat the Toyota iQ by just ten points.
The European Car of the Year is decided by a panel of 59 'senior motoring journalists' from 23 European countries. Each of the 59 judges allocates 25 points across five cars with a maximum of ten per car. This year the Polo was placed first by 25 of the jurors and the iQ by 20.
The Polo, which only went on UK sale in October, has already secured 130,000 orders worldwide. Although the Polo has been placed in the top three in the award's 45-year history, this is the first time it has won. Volkswagen has been shortlisted 11 times for its cars but only the Golf has won, in 1992.
The seven short-listed line up of 2010 European Car of the Year finalists, and their points scores, is as follows:
- Volkswagen Polo: 347
- Toyota iQ: 337
- Vauxhall/Opel Astra: 221
- Skoda Yeti: 158
- Mercedes-Benz E-Class: 155
- Peugeot 3008: 144
- Citroen C3 Picasso: 113
