MPs zero in on drink drivers
03/12/2010
Christmas is nearly here and among the usual cheer the ugly spectre of drink-driving looms ever near. Right on cue, the issue has made the news - but this time in a different form to the usual harrowing TV spots that make Coronation St. even drearier than it already is.
It seems that some MPs are starting to make noises that the legal drink drive limit should be "effectively zero". Currently you are allowed 80mg per 100ml of alcohol to swish around your blood while you clamber into your car, but 20mg per 100ml is the ideal amount, according to a report by the Transport Committee.
"In the long term, we believe that the Government should aim for an ‘effectively zero'… but we acknowledge that is too great a step at this stage," the report read.
The report also suggested that the police should be given more power to test drivers for alcohol levels - currently the police require an element of suspicion to do this.
