Manchester Leads The Charge
08/12/2011
Oldham is set to open the first all-electric car showroom in the country – the first of six planned by the Manchester Electric Car Company who have leased the site of the old Roxy cinema
Dubbed the "Hollinwood Electric Pod", the Manchester Electric Car Company (MECC) is developing what is currently being designed to be less a pure showroom and more a centre for electric vehicles, with planned integration of rapid charging points, repair and maintenance facilities and car and bike rental services.
Councillor David Hibbert, the council's cabinet member for housing, transport and regeneration, stated:
"This will really help to put Hollinwood back on the map. We're the lead authority in Greater Manchester on the electric vehicle scheme, and the old Roxy site is an ideal location.
"Its proximity to the M60 and direct links into Manchester City centre and the middle of Oldham via the A62 would be essential to its success.
"Add it to the forthcoming new Hollinwood Metrolink station, with its park and ride, and we can see real catalysts here to stimulate private investment and future redevelopment."
Continuing its push for electric vehicles, MECC plans to install 300 charging points across Greater Manchester by April 2013.
