Japanese Sales Halve
06/05/2011
The devastating effects of the earthquake and tsunami that ravaged Japan in March have continued to impact its car market, with sales more than halving in April – the biggest monthly drop on record.
Expectations are that these figures won’t recover until much later in the year, leading to fears that manufacturers will post losses for the first half of the year.
Adding to the woe was the ending of the government subsidy that encouraged consumers to swap their old vehicles for newer, greener models.
April saw Toyota’s sales fall by 69%, Nissan’s by 37% and Honda’s by 49%.
