Fuel Rises Empty Roads
01/06/2011
The jump in average fuel prices has been touted as one of the major reasons for "on time" commutes increasing by 4% this year – essentially, there are fewer people on the roads and they are experiencing fewer jams and less congestion.
While some may cheer this on as good news, outside of London, over three quarters of people use their cars to get to work, and as fuel increases in price, the danger is that it will cease to be financially viable to work anywhere outside of the local area – a likely scenario when you consider that, despite motoring costs increasing rapidly over the last 10 years, people who commute by car have remained constant, according to the ONS, the government statics agency.
