BMW has secured itself as official automobile partner for the 2012 Olympics. The German manufacturer will supply the world's no. 1 sporting event with 4,000 cars, comprising of 3 and 5 Series saloons.
The fleet will be used to shuttle VIPs and visiting foreign dignitaries back and forth from the East London venue. BMW intends to sell the vehicles on the second hand market once the final medal ceremony is complete.
Some environmental groups have raised concerns, believing that this contradicts the London Olympic claim to be "the greenest ever", but a BMW spokesperson stated that "a substantial proportion of the fleet will be diesel models... and the Games will provide the perfect opportunity for us to showcase our efficient diesel and electric vehicle technology", in response.
