Famously, Volkswagen, or VW (meaning people's car) was originated by Hitler in 1933. He wanted a car for the working man. The result was the VW Beetle, released in 1936. During World War II, the VW factory was heavily bombed. The American forces captured it and handed it over to the British, who began to use it to produce their own Beetles for use as light transport cars. American, British and French companies could not be convinced to buy the factory and so it continued to produce cars for military use until the end of the war. Bereft of interested parties, allied forces handed VW back to the Germans, By 1955, 1 million Beetles had been produced. By 1973, this figure stood at 16 million, making the Beetle the most-produced car in history. The surprising aspect of this was that the heavy sales were in North America, where clever advertising and its reputation for reliability - characteristics that have stayed with VW to this day – helped sell the Beetle to the new generation. Today's VW is famous for the Golf, Polo and Passat. Over the years, VW has shifted its focus from entry-level cars to mid-range and higher, with the technology and trim in its models reflecting this change, and has enjoyed considerable success as a result. |
