Rover began in 1878, but didn't produce its first car until 1901. Moderate success followed, with Rover enjoying a reputation of producing up-market cars, but it wasn't until the 1950s and 1960s that Rover really hit its stride, with the Land Rover becoming a storming success. The Range Rover was introduced in 1970, which among comfort and versatility, also had 4x4 power and disc brakes on each wheel. Despite this model being a success, the economic background of the decade required the company to accept a government bail-out to the tune of billions of pounds. At the end of the 70s, British Leyland, which Rover had been a part of since 1967, swapped 20% of its holdings for 20% of Honda's. Both companies developed cars together, the most famous result of which being the Rover 200, which proved to be extremely popular in the UK throughout its run, which ended production in 2000 but sold until 2007. Rover as a company no longer exists. Various vehicle property rights and physical assets belong to Nanjing Auto and SAID and Ford owns the Rover marque, which India's Tata Motors will be using as part of their Jaguar Land Rover operations, which they bought from Ford in March 2008. |
