Peugeot's manufacturing history goes all the way back to the 1700s, although it only started to produce motorcars in 1889. Before this, Peugeot produced a variety of products such as dresses, umbrella frames, saw blades and coffee grinders. Like many manufacturers, Peugeot had to put a hold on producing cars during the first world war so as to concentrate on making armaments. But as soon as this was finished, the company focused once more on cars, and by 1929 the first 201 had appeared, at the time the cheapest car on the French market. The 202, 302 and 402 followed during the 30s and Peugeot quickly caught up with Citroën. In 1975 Peugeot bought Citroën out completely, cementing the company as France's number one motorcar manufacturer. In the years that followed, Peugeot has enjoyed success in the rallying world as well as the consumer front, and the model brand names are synonymous with affordable, stylish cars. |
