The Nissan Primera replaced the Nissan Bluebird in 1990, in order to take on the role of a large family car. 1996 saw its second release, with significant upgrades to the suspension system and an estate option. The third generational release arrived in 1999 and continued through to 2002, with an upgraded body style and improved interior features, such as automatic climate control and driver, passenger and side airbags.

Because of falling sales, the third generation of Primeras, which ran from 2002 until to 2008, where withdrawn from the UK during the final months of 2006.
