BMW's 3 Series has seen 5 generational refreshes over the years, having first rolled off the production line in 1975 to enormous success. This success has continued into recent times, with the 3 Series now being BMW's best-selling car ever.
Despite the 3 Series being classed as both entry-level and, with the M versions, race-ready cars, BMW has always incorporated thoughtful ergonomic design, safety features and reasonably high levels of technology into the 3 Series line-up, making them incredibly versatile. The original 3 Series, the E21 (produced from 1975 to 1983) was the first BMW to feature an angled centre console, for example. This has since made its way into almost every BMW model. This model was replaced by the E30 which sold extremely well and also had considerable success on the race track.
The most recent release, the E90, is currently one of the most popular cars in Britain, having sold over 55,000 vehicles in 2007. It is high-tech, powerful and handles well. It's likely that the 3 Series will remain the BMW of choice for a whole range of people for some time yet.
